Reasons for becoming a member

After my post retirement hiatus I realised I was missing the interaction with like-minded pals and a measure of routine in my new life. I knew there were Probus Clubs in Oundle but I was unsure of what it was all about. I found the website very helpful and informative.

I enjoy the variety of presentations and speakers at our monthly meetings.

A change in personal circumstances led to a void in my life. The PC of O has helped fill some of this with discussions and engagement with others. I was grateful for the engaging welcome and the chance to talk about shared interests…..and we share a good meal and a coffee morning each month!

One of our members composed the following relevant poems:-

An Ode to the ‘Probus Club of Oundle’

Probus short for professional businessmen club,

With ‘Oundle Probus’ the natural hub,

You may think it’s an old man’s game,

Put out to grass and put down when lame?

Well think again, we aim to please,

With none of us down on our knees,

Whether you love sport or like to travel,

We’ll have something for you to unravel.

You meet friends at monthly lunches,

Different meals to try and savour,

Make many friends for life,

All ready to help with a favour.

Monthly talks of varied interest,

With food for thought to digest.

Coffee mornings with friends to relax,

And much to debate about interesting facts.

‘Oundle Probus’ meets at the golf club,

Twice a month, overlooking the green,

A lovely vista which needs to be seen,

One to savour and enjoy if one can,

Whether you’re old or just a young man.

Coffee mornings are such good fun,

Brunch to entice the tastebuds of everyone,

So come along and give it a try,

And enjoy a drink between you and I.

The town we know as Oundle

An ancient market town in the Rose of the Shire

with a fascinating heritage and the highest spire.

Steeped in history both Saxon and Roman,

visited by many of the Queens’ and Kings’ men.

On the banks of the Nene,

its many old buildings a delight,

the river passes quietly by the Mill

and shimmers in the light.

The Talbot Hotel stands proud and tall,

for many years since the 16c, serving all

that ventured within,

servants of the Guild from London came

to entertain and drink at the Inn.

Stroll through the market and its prefecture,

with its Famous School at its heart,

it will amaze with its wondrous architecture,

teaching generations science, music and art.

Glancing up to the sky

St Peters towers above, 209 feet high,

Walking beneath its magnificent spire you have seen,

listen quietly to the gentle sounds of the choir within.

Happen upon Oundle School with its many sandstone buildings,

its cloisters, Chapel encompass the grandiose of its teachings

of scholars from wide and afar,

create and mould individuals to serve at the Bar.

It has become the heart and core of the town,

around which the community has enriched and grown.

Enter the Market Square,

where you hear the whispered sounds of history there.

The Butter Cross, Town hall, and market cattle,

people from the past-talking tittle tattle.

Then as the church clock strikes one,

its that time, lunch has begun.

Of Oundle, the story must be told,

to Children, Adults of all it attracts,

 albeit young or indeed old,

the Museum is the collator of artefacts,

and stories of the past to behold.

The Friends and volunteers are vital to preserve

and secure its future and to serve

our Oundle story to the fore

to enlighten visitors,

children, adults and more

for many generations to enjoy,

share with their family,

partner, girl and boy.

The Museum

contained in an ancient Courthouse,

Oundle’s history it  does espouse,

from the Romans to the present,

For one just to browse.

Oundle School and the police cell,

you’ll be amazed the history they tell.

Exhibits and events for visitors to enjoy,

whether from afar or just a local boy.

So please come and see us

and not pass us by.

We’ll meet you with a smile

and a very welcome, Hi!
